Dear New English Students!

Dear New English Students,
If you like writing and reading then this is the class for you. Just like you, I had to take English 110. In my first day essay I remember writing how I did not like writing that much, mainly because it takes some time. Now I have a completely different mind set. After this course, I really do enjoy writing much more, especially when it can be something fun and interesting, like food for example. This class mainly consists of blogs and a few papers, nothing to harsh. So to be sucessful in this course you need to be a decent writer. To be a good writer, remember to always write about something you like and will not get bored researching. For example, I wrote about Italian Food quite often and I enjoyed it because it is my favorite type of food. I also recomend making outlines. These help your writing flow taking much less time and enduring much less writers block.
Hope I gave you some good tips and idea of the class. Good luck and have fun in English 110.
Sincerely,
Nick

What Do You Eat?

What type of dish represents your culture? Taco's, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Spaghetti? Different cultures and regions have different foodways and traditional foods. Typically, American foodway's have been represented with a burger as a "American" meal. Depending on your own culture and traditions, your family or community may have its own important food or foodway.
As far as my own culture and tradition, I am American born and have a Italian heritage. That being said, important food in my own family is Italian Foods. This foodway is important to me because it represents where my family comes from and has also become a tradition. For holidays, celebrations, and even on regular occasions, my family will sit down to a large Italian feast. One specific dish that is important to my culture is Chicken Parmesean. This dish is eaten with the whole family on a variety of special events. We traditionally eat Chicken Parm on Christmas night and on birthdays. Whether it is hot dogs at a basegame or chicken parm for Christmas dinner, each community and culture has thier own important foods and foodways.

What would you do to fit in? What would you do if someone taxed your favorite food? As entertainment and history have shown, I would eat fried worms and throw a party! Not literally, of course the worms are not real, and the party was not exactly... a party.

For my Primary Source Analysis I have selected two works. First is Bob Dolman's movie, "How to Eat Fried Worms". I chose this work not only because it is a good movie, but because it is strange, interesting, revealing, and most of all about food! I'm using it because the movie ties food into the main point of the story (an elementary school boy tries to fit it and ends up making a bet to eat 10 fried worms). First, I see this movie as strange because it is worms! Second, I feel like this movie does revolve around food and ends with a good moral. Overall, this movie really does exemplify the importance of food in our societies.

For my second choice, I have chosen an article, which includes a first hand account, of the Boston Tea Party of 1773. I chose this because as most of us know, The Boston Tea Party is a big part of history they is all about revolution and of course, food! Although by this time in my life, I do not find the party strange, but certainly interesting and revealing. When I think of the party, I ask myself, Why did they do it? and Why tea? Well, interestingly enough, I found how important tea was in that era, and in the present. I feel the gravitude of this event, and the fact that it was over tea, will make this work a good source to analyse.

You Are What You Eat

Welcome to Nick's English Eats!

Many of you may have heard the saying "You are what you eat", but what exactly does this mean? To many of us, this saying is a way to explain and explore a person's personality, culture, and traditions throught the role of food in thier life. In many cases, a person or groups food and foodways can tell a lot about them. Simply put, a person's favorite meal can reveal info about thier background, interests, personality, and even experiences.

First and foremost, my favorite meal is Chicken Parmesean, an Italian Cuisine. Writing this blog, I ask myself, "am I what i eat?" YES! Of course I am not chicken parmesean, but the meal certainly does tell about my background, interest, and experiences.

I first had chicken parmesean during a family dinner at my grandmothers. My family is very Italian and this meal grew on me very fast. I feel as if this meal truly does represent my background. Although I live in Ohio and eat a variety of foods, my favorite food is chicken parmesean which is a common Italian meal. In addition to my background, a chicken parmesean also has meaning connected to my past experiences. My family cooks chicken parmesean as a birthday dinner because it is my favorite meal. Reflecting on my favorite meal, I come to the conclusion, We are what we eat!
