Welcome to Nick's English Eats!
Many of you may have heard the saying "You are what you eat", but what exactly does this mean? To many of us, this saying is a way to explain and explore a person's personality, culture, and traditions throught the role of food in thier life. In many cases, a person or groups food and foodways can tell a lot about them. Simply put, a person's favorite meal can reveal info about thier background, interests, personality, and even experiences.
First and foremost, my favorite meal is Chicken Parmesean, an Italian Cuisine. Writing this blog, I ask myself, "am I what i eat?" YES! Of course I am not chicken parmesean, but the meal certainly does tell about my background, interest, and experiences.
I first had chicken parmesean during a family dinner at my grandmothers. My family is very Italian and this meal grew on me very fast. I feel as if this meal truly does represent my background. Although I live in Ohio and eat a variety of foods, my favorite food is chicken parmesean which is a common Italian meal. In addition to my background, a chicken parmesean also has meaning connected to my past experiences. My family cooks chicken parmesean as a birthday dinner because it is my favorite meal. Reflecting on my favorite meal, I come to the conclusion, We are what we eat!
It's really fun seeing how people connect with foods that are related to their backgrounds and ancestors. I envy that because unfortunately I have no clue where I came from! I like how you believe so strongly that we are what we eat because I agree entirely. I think your food choice may reflect that you are family oriented and down to earth since you chose something so personal that displays your family history. I look forward to hearing more.
ReplyDeleteI like the tradition that you have with your birthday meal. My brother-in-law is also Italian and I know that his family has mostly Italian dishes at Thanksgiving instead of the basic American layout. Do you eat Italian dishes at any other holidays?
ReplyDeleteI love this, and though I may not be Italian I'll have to agree the foods are some of the best. I initially was trying to describe the "foodways" of my cultural background, but the food I eat isn't necessarily Scottish influenced, more than it is influenced by a large variety of places. Being able to identify a food that directly relates to your background is pretty significant and unique characteristic.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely what we eat Nick... I also love chicken parmasan! I don't eat Italian as much as I would like to, but when I do, I would always order a chicken parmasan!
ReplyDeleteI love how you thought about your family's own foodways in this post. I've always been somewhat envious of Italian families, since I love Italian food and no-one makes it like actual Italians. Chicken parmaggiano is definitely a favorite food of mine too, and I can understand why you like it so very much.
